Hi David; I used to own a 1980 Suzuki 400 single.
It was a GX400. I really liked that bike, but I always wished it was a 500. It was a standard design with the footpegs back under your hips instead of slung out in front. It was a great handler, very responsive to the point of being "twitchy". I kept it for 10 years and the only expense I ever had was tires, brakes, chains and sprockets. It was a kickstarter with a handlebar decompression lever and it almost always started with one good kick. If they made a bigger version I would have bought another, but the 400 was just a little underpowered for the Interstate Highway although I did have it up to 90 once. A really good little bike, but the LS650 is much better. As for the mileage, mine only had half the miles you say, but if it was maintained with regular oil changes I would not be afraid of it.
